Saint Spyiridon Church
A famous Greek Orthodox Church situated in the old town of Corfu is Saint Spyridon Church. Dating back to the 1580s, this is the place where the relics of Saint Spyridon are found. This is indeed the patron of the Island, making this church the most distinct among all others on the island. The legend dictates that in 1489 the relics of both Saints Spyridon and Theodora Augusta were sent to the island of Corfu from Constantinople, following the end of the Byzantine Empire.
Paleokastritsa
Paleokastritsa Theotokos is a 13th century monastery, which was built on top of the remains of old fortifications. It boasts a privileged location at the peak of a hill and offers exquisite views to the Ionian Sea. In the premises of the monastery, you will find a small-sized church, as well as lush gardens and an old olive press. There is also a museum where Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons and religious items are displayed.
Iasonas and Sosipatros
Situated at the suburb of Anemomylos, the Church of Iasonas and Sosipatros dates back in the Middle Byzantine era (11th century) and is one of the oldest and finest examples of two-pillared cruciform churches with an octagonal dome. Michail Damaskinos and Emmanouil Mpouniali-Tzane have painted a lot of the icons inside the church.
The Synagogue
This is one of the most elegant synagogues in Greece and is else known as Scuola Greca, having been built somewhere in the 17th century. This is a place of exemplary architecture, following the distinctive Venetian style.
Saint Jacob – Duomo
From 1632 and to this date, this has been the Catholic Cathedral in Corfu. This is one of the most refined buildings on the island with distinctive Gothic baroque style, providing superb details that capture the attention of all visitors.
Vlacherna
Vlacherna is a small yet one-of-a-kind monastery dedicated to Virgin Mary Vlachernon, built in the 17th century also. This is a world renowned landmark of the island of Corfu and the Ionian Islands in general, perched under Kanoni.
